The Medicare program was created in 1965 under Title XVIII of the Social Security Act. Medicare is a nationwide, federally funded health insurance program available to individuals who are 65 years of age or older, individuals of any age with permanent kidney failure and certain disabled people under age 65. Medicare requires you pay a deductible and a co-pay out of pocket. However, even if you are covered under Medicare, you may have a supplemental plan that pays any out-of-pocket expenses you may have to pay under those plans.

You're typically covered if you meet one of these requirements:

  • You are 65 or older
  • You are under 65 but with permanent kidney failure (determined 3 months after dialysis begins)
  • You are under 65, permanently disabled and entitled to Social Security benefits (beginning 2 years after the beginning of disability benefits)

However, you are not automatically covered under Medicare when you turn 65 (or the other conditions described above occur). You must apply for benefits.
